5 Reasons Why Sourdough Bread is the Healthiest!

Learn 5 reasons why sourdough bread is healthier for you than regular bread! My top 5 reasons why you should switch to sourdough bread and ditch regular bread!

Sourdough bread is easier to digest! (bye stomach pain!)

Sourdough bread is said to reduce stomach discomfort after eating compared to regular breads (source: Nutritional benefits of sourdoughs: A systematic review). Because the sourdough enzymes have already broken down most of the compounds in the bread for us, it is easier to digest sourdough bread (source: Sourdough Bread: Is It Good for You?).

Sourdough bread also contains healthy bacteria or probiotics which are great for the gut! (source: Sourdough Microbiome Comparison and Benefits)

Sourdough Bread Protects Against Type Two Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease!

During the long fermentation the lactic acid produces many substances that are found to protect against type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as well as a decrease in harder to metabolize substances found in non fermented breads (source: Metabolic profiling of sourdough fermented wheat and rye bread).

Sourdough Bread Stays Fresh Longer! Without Preservatives!

Sourdough bread lasts longer without any added preservatives! Regular bread usually has preservatives added for a long shelf life. Sourdough bread is known to taste better, have a better crumb, and have a naturally longer shelf life due to the fermentation process! Eating Sourdough Bread Lowers Blood Sugar, and Protects Against Cancer!

Sourdough bread is a great source of: calcium, potassium, magnesium, folate, and niacin. It is also very low in sugar! Sourdough bread is high in antioxidants, which can protect against cancer and other diseases.

An average one slice of sourdough bread (about 50 grams) contains:

You will also have lower blood sugar eating sourdough bread than white bread, the bacteria that help make the sourdough, also break down the starches in the bread in a unique way, causing your body to absorb them slower and have a lower blood sugar spike. Sourdough Bread has more vitamins and minerals!

During the fermentation process the natural yeast break down a compound in the dough called Phytic Acid. Phytic Acid inhibits vitamin and mineral absorption in our body. So our wild yeast friends our helping us out by removing this phytic acid from the bread for us before we eat it, allowing our bodies to absorb vitamins and minerals! (source: USA Today)
